What to do when…
What Should You Do If You Have a Gastrointestinal Infection?
Bed rest is advisable due to the weakness that usually accompanies this condition. The bathroom should be quickly and easily accessible. It is important to replenish lost fluids and minerals. If vomiting is mild or has already stopped, you should drink plenty of fluids. Tea, salted drinks, or broth are suitable options. Fluids should be taken in small sips to prevent further vomiting. Solid food should not be introduced until the body can tolerate fluids again. It is best to start with cooked oatmeal, boiled potatoes, or other easily digestible foods. Diarrhea should not initially be treated with constipating foods or medications, because the body uses diarrhea to expel pathogens or toxins. Applying heat (such as a cherry pit pouch) and drinking chamomile tea, for example, can help relieve abdominal cramps.
Remedy for a Cold:
- Peel 1 piece of ginger (about the size of your thumb) and slice it.
- Measure out about 250 ml of water, add the ginger, bring to a boil, and let it simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Pour the liquid through a strainer and season to taste with honey or lemon juice, if desired.
Heartburn—What Helps? Additional Steps
In addition to targeted treatment with medication, several other measures have proven effective in managing heartburn.
In case of acute symptoms
- Drink plenty of water or unsweetened chamomile tea. The liquid flushes the acid back into the stomach, where it can also help dilute it slightly.
- If you experience heartburn at night: Elevate your upper body.
- Take a short walk after a heavy meal to aid digestion.
To prevent new symptoms
- Spread several small meals throughout the day.
- Choose easily digestible foods such as steamed vegetables, potatoes, or rice.
- Avoid foods that are high in fat, very sweet, or spicy.
- Instead of coffee and carbonated beverages, opt for mild thirst-quenchers such as still water or herbal tea.
- Eat slowly and chew thoroughly.
- Avoid stress and use proven relaxation techniques (e.g., yoga, autogenic training) to specifically reduce stress.
- Quit smoking
- Avoid alcohol
